During the past few years, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York enacted “wage theft laws” that have significantly increased the penalties for improperly classifying workers and failing to pay wages due to employees. Moreover, in New Jersey, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development can issue criminal penalties and company-wide “stop-work orders” to employers.
This webinar will discuss how to properly classify workers as employees, independent contractors, or volunteers, and the proper classification of employees as exempt or nonexempt, to avoid these penalties.
Other topics include
- Overtime issues and allowable wage deductions
- How and when your organization is required to pay overtime
- How to implement wage reductions and furloughs without violating wage and hour laws
- Supervisor liability for wage and hour violations and insight into New Jersey’s “crime of pattern of wage nonpayment”
