On November 8, 2018, our Long Island office held its first legal clinic, a “Legal Check-up for Long Island Nonprofits.” This half-day program provided an opportunity for eight Long Island-based nonprofits to 
receive free legal assessments. We are so thankful for the overwhelming turnout from our volunteers-20 attorneys representing eight different law firms and companies!
The morning began with a 1.5 hour CLE credit program entitled “Spotting 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Legal Issues,” presented by attorneys from Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. Following the program, our volunteer attorneys met with their assigned nonprofits and identified legal issues that the nonprofits should consider.
Girls Incorporated® of Long Island, one of the nonprofits that attended the event, aims to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold through their school and community-based programming for girls ages 5-18. Barbara Beatus-Vegh, Associate Director of Girls Incorporated® of Long Island came to the event with a long list of questions and left with three pages of notes to help guide the organization’s next steps.
The event was also a resounding success from our volunteers’ perspectives. Steven Seltzer, a volunteer from Moritt Hock & Hamroff LLP, summarized the event perfectly when he said that it was “a great way to dip your toe into pro bono. It was an excellent CLE with an overview of issues to be aware of, and then we met with the organizations for a lighter touch on how we can help…. And to be out by lunchtime…it was a terrific event.”
