Legal Issues in Volunteer Program Management – September 1

This workshop will discuss the legal issues involved with using volunteers, including: the definition of a volunteer; the laws that apply, and that do not apply, to volunteers;  how to screen potential volunteers;  When and how a nonprofit can be held liable for the acts of its volunteers; and procedures that a nonprofit should to reduce the risk of liability to your volunteers.

Employment Lunch and Learn – Legal Issues in telecommuting –
September 19

This seminar will discuss the legal issues faced by nonprofit employers when they allow employees to telecommute.  Issues to be discussed include: The pros and cons of telecommuting;  employment law compliance issues (under the FLSA, the ADA, OSHA, Worker’s Comp and more); issues regarding privacy and monitoring employee communications; intellectual property rights; choosing the best candidate for a telecommuting arrangement, and successfully supervising telecommuters;  developing a Telecommuting Program and Policy; and other related issues.

Employment Lunch and Learn – Diversity Issues in the Workplace – October 10

This workshop will discuss the legal issues that nonprofit employers must deal with when it has a diverse workforce  - diverse in gender, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and in numerous other ways.Board Roles and Responsibilities – October 23, 2012This workshop will address the legal and fiduciary obligations of a board of directors of a nonprofit organization, and will help board members and key staff understand the proper roles of board members in the governance of a nonprofit organization. Topics include the legal roles, responsibilities, and activities of the board of directors; the role of a board in day-to-day operations; potential liabilities of board members and legal protections for the board.

Mergers, affiliations, collaborations, joint ventures – what are the differences and are any of these options right for your organization?  We will discuss the legal issues applicable to mergers or other forms of collaboration, and will give you the tools to help you determine if these arrangements really offer solutions to your organization's challenges.
