Pro Bono Partnership Announces
New Website And Expansion Plans

The Pro Bono Partnership, winner of the 1999 American Bar Association / West Group Public Service Award as the most outstanding bar association program providing direct service to the public, is pleased to announce its new website at www.probonopartnership.org.

The website contains information about the Partnership, its volunteers and clients. It also has a listing of the latest pro bono opportunities, and lets volunteer attorneys sign up on-line for specific matters or to simply request more information.

The Partnership is also pleased to announce that it will be expanding into New Jersey. After receiving inquires from several New Jersey-based Fortune 1000 companies, the Partnership plans to open an office in the northern part of the state to coordinate the efforts of in-house counsel who wish to provide non-litigation based pro bono services to nonprofit organizations that need but cannot afford legal services. Schering-Plough, AlliedSignal and Prudential have formed a Leadership Committee and have committed financial and programmatic resources to this project, which has been enthusiastically received by other leading New Jersey corporations. The Partnership hopes to start operating in New Jersey by the Spring of 2000.

Since its inception in 1997, the Partnership has helped 143 nonprofit organizations in the Westchester and Fairfield county area with over 300 legal projects in the areas of corporate law, employment, tax, contracts, real estate, and intellectual property, all through the pro bono efforts of over 130 inhouse and private law firm attorneys "We’re thrilled with the success we’ve had in our brief two year history," said Richard S. Hobish, Executive Director of the Pro Bono Partnership. "We’re now in an exciting expansion mode, and we’re constantly looking for new ways to provide meaningful pro bono opportunities to corporate counsel."

The Partnership is also expanding internally. Maurice K. Segall has joined the Partnership full-time as Senior Staff Attorney. Mr. Segall, recipient of the 1996 Liberty Bell Award from the Stamford Regional Bar for outstanding community service, has been with the Partnership on a part-time basis since its inception, and he will continue to work in all areas of programming and volunteer coordination. Nancy Haneman has also joined the Partnership as Director of Development and Community Relations.

Formed in 1997 by the Corporate Bar Fund to facilitate pro bono services by inside counsel, the Partnership is a coordination and resource center that helps lawyers provide volunteer legal services to nonprofit community-based organizations in Fairfield and Westchester counties. Its primary focus is to encourage inside counsel to provide pro bono legal assistance to non-profits that serve poor and disadvantaged populations and that need but cannot provide legal services.
